Welcome to a new and hopefully continuing feature here at Moviegoing with Bill, where each weekday I’ll present a thought or two - usually as questions - that fellow moviegoers are greatly encouraged to converse about. A mini-forum? A virtual soapbox? Let’s see.
This week's first three Kernels can be found here, here, and here.
Dear Moviegoers,
Welp, the road for Redbox has reached its final marker, as the company has announced that it will be shutting down. The closing of these DVD rental kiosks, usually found in front of groceries and gas stations all over the country, represents a challenge in protecting physical media at all costs. Also - are moviegoers accepting the victorious streaming platforms, or are we being forced to go with the flow?
Like independent movie theaters, I feel that a resurgence of repertory rental houses could be very beneficial for community film culture and potentially lucrative as DVDs continue to be pushed out of the market.
So…what would you do to save physical movie media? From art house kiosks to in-theater libraries to brick-and-mortar shops, let’s brainstorm.
Please feel free to comment at any length, share or forward the thread to friends and family, and consider becoming a supporting moviegoer.
