Dear (free) Moviegoers,
I’d like to formally welcome y’all to Moviegoing with Bill - welcome!
Over the course of May - thanks to Substack’s new recommendations feature (primarily from the gracious Thom Hartmann) - this publication has seen a significant influx of readers and subscribers, which has been awfully exciting to witness and has been personally rejuvenating.
Through this newsletter blog, as I wrote on the About page, it is my goal to review and report on the films of interest to and the events happening in and around Hollywood South, LA. There’s much to cover and much this community has to offer - we’re more than pretty faces!
It’s cool to find that there are moviegoers and readers - in and beyond the region - who are interested in staying up to date on my writing.
As Justin Timberlake said in The Social Network, “You know what’s cool?” Supporting (paid) subscribers would be.
Movies and writing are what make my world spin. They’re also how I make my living, or rather how I want to make my living. I freelance a lot, but if I could do it 100% for myself… that’s the dream.
No worries if you’d prefer to remain a free subscriber for now - gas prices are high, inflation sucks, and times are unsettling. If you’re on the fence or are completely interested in providing support, please keep in mind:
There are three supporting tiers: monthly ($6), annual ($55), and super ($120) (also annual).
All readers are members of my recommendation-heavy Movie Club at sign-up (the first post is coming shortly).
No paywalls at this time, so let’s keep it that way!
I’d love to do a podcast and/or some video work here - maybe even an audio film book series? - but would only be able to with some new equipment and software. With your support, I could afford some travel to more regional film festivals, and be able to stay longer.
And, of course, I could pay utility bills worry-free.
Once again, there’s no anxiety meant by this kindly request - just a message to fellow moviegoers and readers everywhere to invest in independent film journalism should the resources be available.
I’m more than happy to have y’all here in any capacity. Together, let’s create a dialogue around Hollywood South, criticism, and the movies that we love and the ones that we hope to learn about.
Sincerely Yours in Moviegoing,
Feel free to message me anytime in the comments section of posts, or by email.
